These lifestyle changes include;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular physical exercise;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating healthy diet with recommended portion sizes;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping track of blood pressure as well as cholesterol levels;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective stress management and;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol in moderation and quitting smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does it mean to have pre-diabetes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you eat food, your digestive system breaks down the carbohydrates in food into glucose (sugar). Insulin, a hormone produced by your pancreas, then helps move glucose from the bloodstream to your body\u2019s cells, which use glucose for energy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Source: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndss.com.au\/about-diabetes\/resources\/find-a-resource\/insulin-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Diabetes Service Scheme<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if your body has trouble moving the glucose from the bloodstream to your body\u2019s cells, that glucose will build up in your bloodstream, leading to potential health complications. Pre-diabetes is when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (Source: Diabetes Australia).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, it means that you have at least one of two conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), in which the levels of glucose in your blood are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impaired fasting glucose (IFT), where your blood glucose levels are higher when you are fasting, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I know if I have pre-diabetes?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-diabetes does not have any symptoms. The only way to know for sure if you have this condition is to consult your doctor, who will organise tests and give you a proper diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) will be used to find out more about your body\u2019s blood glucose levels and get you the results for your diagnosis. Here is the process for this test;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will need to fast (not eat) for 8 hours before the test<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A blood sample is taken and you are given a sweet drink that contains 75g of glucose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 1 and 2 hours after you have had the drink, another blood test is performed to monitor changes in blood glucose levels\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your blood glucose level is high, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes, your doctor will diagnose you with pre-diabetes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the risk factors for pre-diabetes?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk factors for pre-diabetes include;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A family history of type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being overweight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain waist measurements<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater than 94 cm in Caucasian men<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater than 90cm for Asian men<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater than 80cm for Women<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low levels of physical activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure and\/or high cholesterol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polycystic ovary syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some antipsychotic medications<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, people from certain regions have a greater risk of developing pre-diabetes, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Middle Eastern people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Asian people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacific Islander people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North African people<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/conditionsandtreatments\/diabetes-pre-diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BetterHealth<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can a healthy lifestyle help manage pre-diabetes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-diabetes is managed by combining several habits into a healthy lifestyle.
