In men, it causes particular damage to fertility\u2014the ability to make a woman pregnant. The ultimate cause of this is high blood glucose levels.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual and fertility problems in men often have a large psychological impact. This article will describe those problems and how they occur. It will also discuss how they\u2019re treated.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that in many cases the damage done to male fertility by type 2 diabetes can be prevented, because type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed in up to 60% of people by making sustainable changes in daily habits.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article explains how that\u2019s done and outlines the support that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Life!<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program offers to achieve it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>High blood sugar and male infertility<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperglaecemia (also known as high blood sugar) occurs when there is too much glucose in the bloodstream. Our bodies need blood glucose to provide our cells with nutrients and energy, but the amount of glucose in the bloodstream must be carefully managed. When it is not managed as with hyperglycaemia, it can result in damage to blood vessels and nerves. This decreases the ability of our nerves to send signals and weakens the walls of the blood vessels that bring them oxygen. This damage is called neuropathy.<\/span><b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic neuropathy affects the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS is a network of nerves that connects the brain to the rest of the body, controlling vital processes such as breathing, digestion and sexual functions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes seriously damages the nerves of the ANS, and one of the signs of this damage is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sexual dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction is where one or a group of conditions prevents someone from having or enjoying sex.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This explains the importance of managing blood sugar levels to maintain fertility. Well-managed blood glucose levels reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction and increases men\u2019s testosterone levels and sex drive.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>What is type 2 diabetes?<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes affects how the body converts food into energy. When you eat, your body breaks the food down into glucose, which is then released into your bloodstream. As your blood glucose levels rise, your pancreas releases insulin to allow the glucose to enter your cells, where it\u2019s used for energy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With diabetes, the body either doesn\u2019t produce enough insulin or is unable to use it effectively. This results in high levels of glucose in the bloodstream (hyperglycaemia), which can damage blood vessels and nerves over time. This, as we have seen, leads to serious long-term health complications. Some of these affect male fertility.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeprogram.org.au\/health-hub\/diabetes-type-difference\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two main types of diabetes\u2014type 1 and type 2.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There is also gestational diabetes which can occur in pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Type 1 diabetes<\/strong> is caused by an autoimmune reaction (meaning that the body attacks the cells of the pancreas) resulting in\u00a0 pancreas being unable\u00a0 to make insulin. People with type 1 are usually diagnosed in childhood or adolescence and need to take insulin every day for the rest of their lives to live, as currently there\u2019s no cure for it. Around 10% of people who are living with diabetes have type 1.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Around 90% of people with diabetes have type 2.<\/strong> This is where the body cannot use insulin effectively and therefore can\u2019t keep blood glucose levels in a range that doesn&#8217;t do damage. Type 2 develops over years and is usually diagnosed in adults. It\u2019s important to have your blood glucose checked if you\u2019re at risk of type 2 diabetes or have any symptoms (however symptoms are rare or with very late diagnosis). Type 2 can in many cases be prevented or delayed by making changes to your lifestyle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Risk factors for type 2 diabetes<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes apply to both men and women. Some of them can be changed; others cannot.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><strong>Modifiable<\/strong><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (changeable) risk factors include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an unhealthy diet&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being physically inactive<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being overweight or obese<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high cholesterol<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poor sleep patterns<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b><strong>Non-modifiable<\/strong><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (unchangeable) risk factors include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">age\u2014the risk of type 2 diabetes increases with age.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethnicity<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having a parent or sibling who has (or had) type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being male<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Being overweight or obese, especially if you carry excess fat around the waist, is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes for both men and women. However, research suggests that men are more likely to develop it at a lower relative weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>How is diabetes diagnosed?<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosis, monitoring and management can help prevent or delay the symptoms and complications of diabetes. It\u2019s diagnosed through blood tests that show if your blood glucose level is outside the optimal range.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are diagnosed with diabetes, it\u2019s important to go for regular check-ups and blood glucose monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Can diabetes affect male fertility?<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/49729569_The_influence_of_diabetes_mellitus_on_male_reproductive_function_A_poorly_investigated_aspect_of_male_infertility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking into how common male infertility as a result of diabetes is, found that 51% of its participants had experienced subfertility (being less than normally fertile or having reduced reproductive capacity). Treatment can help reduce the risk of developing complications associated with the disease.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-banner -half-image\">\n    <div class=\"-text\">\n        <h2 class=\"-eyebrow-heading\"><\/h2>\n        <h3 class=\"-large-heading\">Join our free <em>Life!<\/em> program today and reduce the risk of diabetes-related fertility challenges!<\/h3>\n        <div class=\"-button\">\n            <a\n                href=\"#health-check\"\n                class=\"button\"\n            >Check your eligibility in 3 mins<\/a>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"-image\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/lifeprogram.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/diabetes-male-fertility-scaled.jpg\"\n            alt=\"diabetes male fertility\"\n        \/>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>How does diabetes affect male sexual and reproductive health?<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Obesity and type 2 diabetes have a close association, and men who live with both conditions may experience reductions in:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semen volume<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">total sperm count<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sperm concentration<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progressive motility (the type of sperm movement that\u2019s necessary to reach and fertilise eggs)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone level.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Male infertility\u2014Erectile dysfunction, Retrograde ejaculation, Sperm quality and count<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes is associated with the following aspects of male infertility.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Erectile dysfunction (ED)<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ED is where a man either can\u2019t get an erection or can\u2019t keep one for long enough to have sex. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seventy-five percent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of men with diabetes experience ED.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hyperglycaemia causes erectile dysfunction in the following ways:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduces nitric oxide, a substance that allows the blood flow to the penis that\u2019s necessary for an erection.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The damage that hyperglycaemia causes to blood vessels hinders that blood flow.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The damage that hyperglycaemia causes to nerves leads to decreased arousal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not only high blood glucose that causes erectile dysfunction; other conditions associated with diabetes do too. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and the tendency to store fat around the belly are all linked to type 2 and all cause ED. Men with diabetes-related ED are between four and five times more likely to acquire Peyronie\u2019s disease. This deforms the penis, making sex either painful or impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Problems with ejaculation<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes affects ejaculation in several ways. It causes retrograde ejaculation, where diabetic neuropathy results in semen going backwards into the bladder during orgasm instead of out of the penis.&nbsp;This can lead to infertility through a reduction of the amount and quality of semen that does emerge normally.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic neuropathy can also cause retarded ejaculation and inability to ejaculate at all.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Recurrent genital thrush<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrush is an infection that produces a fungus called candida. Men with diabetes can experience repeated cases of genital thrush. This is because the excess sugar that is excreted in their urine encourages candida to develop and thrive.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><strong>Symptoms of genital thrush include:<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">redness or a rash (mainly under the foreskin)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itching around the head of the penis<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a \u2018yeasty\u2019 smell<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a white, lumpy appearance to the skin of the penis<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soreness during sex.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Decreased Libido<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men with diabetes often have decreased libido (low sex drive). It\u2019s caused by fatigue, stress and the side effects of medication. Men with type 2 diabetes who are overweight have twice the risk of experiencing decreased testosterone. This also lowers the libido.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Hypogonadism<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypogonadism is a condition in which the body doesn\u2019t produce enough testosterone. It is more common in men with type 2 diabetes. The conditions are certainly linked, but at the moment we don\u2019t know exactly how. Older age and obesity may be factors, as both are associated with type 2 diabetes and both decrease testosterone levels. These include.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Fatigue<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic fatigue is much worse than normal tiredness: it\u2019s a severe lack of energy that makes simple tasks very difficult. This can result in anxiety, depression and insomnia, as well as dizziness, inability to concentrate and memory problems. There are several ways in which diabetes can cause fatigue:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperglycaemia affects circulation. This means our cells are deprived of oxygen and nutrients, and that causes fatigue. High blood sugar also disrupts sleep.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic complications such as heart disease and kidney problems can cause fatigue\u2014as can some of the medications used to treat them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Urological problems<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Over 50% of men with diabetes experience urological issues. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>These include:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the sudden, frequent and intense need to urinate<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inability to control urination<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary tract infections (UTIs).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)\u2014also called an enlarged prostate. This can block the flow of urine from the bladder and cause urinary tract or kidney problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Reversing diabetes-induced male infertility<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood glucose levels caused by diabetes can harm male reproductive function. Although some studies have reported the benefits of using insulin and other glucose regulators to control high blood glucose levels, more high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm their positive effects on male reproduction.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>To prevent and treat erectile dysfunction, it\u2019s important to make lifestyle changes that can help manage blood glucose levels. These changes include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Type 1 diabetes\u2019 impact on fertilisation<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1 diabetes can harm fertility and reproductive health in both men and women. It can cause hormonal imbalances that can lead to problems with implantation and conception. Diabetes is also linked to lower sperm and embryo quality and DNA damage.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Treatment of diabetes-induced male infertility<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the symptoms of diabetes-induced male infertility can be avoided or improved by lifestyle changes and, if appropriate, medication and surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, treatment for erectile dysfunction can include medicine that increases blood flow to the penis as well as supplementary testosterone.
